Now Sri Lanka is on the threshold of a new bright future, in which confidently leading the country by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. In the history of the state, which has ancient roots and 2500 years of history, were not so many leaders who have received the status of “National Hero”. Mahinda Rajapaksa – one of them. Mahinda Rajapaksa is to some an enigma. His rise to power has been phenomenal.  His is an improbable story. That story is epic. “I am sure that the whole world looks towards Sri Lanka and its President, because the world can learn from a small country that has been able to defeat terrorism”- H.E. Udayanga Weeratunga, the Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Russian Federation said. History of the President of Sri Lanka Mahinda Rajapaksa – the history of the present leader.  “My pleasant surprise for this evening is to launch….the biography of the President Mahinda Rajapaksa which is published by me in Russian & English languages”- noted the Ambassador Udayanga Weeratunga. “I have inserted in the book the political history of the Rajapaksa dynasty that runs back to over 70 years, the life stories of the ancestors of the current president, how they molded the native south region of the country, about the childhood and younger days of the President, his early life as a young member of the parliament. And of course I haven’t forgotten to include interesting facts about the most reliable life-time partner by his side, the First Lady, Madam Shiranthi Rajapaksa. You would further read about his family members, the three sons. I have also added chapters about the brothers of the President, Chamal, Basil and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa who serve the country in various important ministerial posts along with the President.
The last chapters that start from 2005, I have added only the official facts about the Presidential duties of His Excellency, to highlight, his interests to the country which are above his personal interests. That dedication made him win the war that was invincible against terrorism!”
Life stories of leaders have been of deep value and interest to many people. Most of them have proved to be cultural and historical information to more than a single generation. Most often, the value of speeches made by such individuals are seen only in perspective. It is too easy to forget that we are living history – that our leaders, their acts and their policies – are creating history for our children and our children’s children. This collection of information of His Excellency Mahinda Rajapaksa depicts the caliber of a man who uttered the words of vision he natured in his heart and that entire he has done for the motherland that birthed his dreams and honed his sensibilities.
A few pages cannot do justice to the road he has walked, the vision he nurtured in his heart and all that he has done for the motherland that birthed his dreams and honed his sensibilities.  What is possible is to offer snapshots of landmarks, events that define the journey, the dream and the history that contains the unmistakable signature of a simple man: Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Now he is the President of the country and a people to whom he gave dignity and self-respect. This book is a tribute to a genuine Sri Lankan leader who has carved a niche for himself in the history of a nation.
The Ambassador of Sri Lanka H.E. Mr. Udayanga Weeratunga expressed his heart-felt gratitude to the Presidential Media Unit for the valuable contributions made to enable me to write this volume.
