Armenia

On the 12th of February 1992 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka communicated to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Armenia the decision of the Government of Sri Lanka to accord diplomatic recognition to the Republic of Armenia.

On the 29th of June 1993 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed that the Republic of Armenia expressed its willingness to establish diplomatic relations with the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka at ambassadorial level.

On the 28th of September 1993 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow informed the Embassy of Armenia in Moscow that the Government of Sri Lanka had decided to appoint H.E. Dr. Nissanka P. Wijeyeratne, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Russia, concurrently Ambassador to Armenia, with residence in Moscow.

On the 03rd November 1993 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed that the Government of Armenia had given its agreement to the appointment of H.E. Dr. Nissanka P. Wijeyeratne as Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Armenia.

On the 19th of December 1995 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow informed the Embassy of Armenia in Moscow that H.E. Mr. N.M.M.I. Hussain was appointed Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Russia, concurrently Ambassador to Armenia, with residence in Moscow. On the 16th of January 1996 the Government of Armenia provided its agreement for this appointment.

On the 01st of June 1998 the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Moscow informed the Embassy of Armenia in Moscow that the Government of Sri Lanka wished to appoint H.E. Mr. Nagoorpitchai Sikkander, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Russia, concurrently Ambassador to Armenia, with residence in Moscow. On the 18th of June 1998 the Government of Armenia provided its agreement for this appointment.

On the 07th of June 1999 H.E. N. Sikkander presented credentials to H.E. Mr. Robert Kocharian, President of the Republic of Armenia, and became the first Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Armenia.

During his visit to Armenia H.E. N. Sikkander met H.E. Mr. Vardan Oskanian, Minister of Foreign Affairs, and reiterated the importance of appointing Hon. Consul for Sri Lanka in Armenia, in particular for enhancing trade.

As well, H.E. the Ambassador met H.E. Mr. Haik Gevorkyan, Minister of Trade and Industries, who showed interest in importing tea directly from Sri Lanka.

In addition, H.E. the Ambassador had discussion with many businessmen and found out that Armenia was very much interested in importing precious and semi-precious stones in view of Armenia’s technical capabilities and factories to make jewelleries for the western market. H.E. the Ambassador visited the Yerevan Jewellery Plant and had discussion with the First Deputy Director Mr. Armen Grigoryan on the matter.

On the 13th of March 2001 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka that the Embassy of Armenia in India had been concurrently accredited to Sri Lanka. On the 21st of June 2001 the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia that the Government of Sri Lanka granted “Agrement” to the proposed appointment of Mr. Armen Baiboutian as the Ambassador of Armenia to Sri Lanka with residence in New Delhi.  

On the tsunami issue (2004), Armenia helped Sri Lanka by giving power generators, blankets, etc.
