In 2008 H.E. Dr. Kairat Umarov was appointed as the Ambassador to Sri Lanka (concurrently accredited from New Delhi). This is the first occasion an Ambassador for Kazakhstan has been appointed to Sri Lanka. He was scheduled to present his credentials to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 16th October 2008. Dr. Umarov paid a courtesy call on H.E. Hussein A. Bhaila, then acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, on 15 October 2008 and exchanged views on matters of mutual interest.
Kazakhstan and Sri Lanka cooperate in many multilateral fora, including the Asian Cooperation Dialogue hosted in Kazakhstan in 2008.
Tour operators from Kazakhstan who visited Sri Lanka are keen to promote Sri Lanka as a tourist destination in their country. Ceylon tea is popular in Kazakhstan. The energy sector is an important area that would be of interest to Sri Lanka, considering the vast resources of fossil fuel available in Kazakhstan, and the feasibility of Kazakhstan sharing its expertise in this sector with Sri Lanka.
