On the 12th of February 1992, the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka has recognized the Independence of Ukraine with the simultaneous establishment of the diplomatic relations.
On the 13th of December 2002, H.E. N. Sikkander, the Ambassador, paid his farewell call on H.E. Volodymyr Yelchenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and thanked him for the cooperation extended by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine to establish diplomatic relations and assistance in concluding the Trade Agreement and finalising the Sri Lanka-Ukraine Double Taxation Agreement.
Political contacts
Top rank officials of Ukraine and Sri Lanka have not been exchanged with the visits up today, but some contacts on the official level took place.
October 1996 – The Delegation of the State Committee on Bridge Building and Architecture of Ukraine visited Sri Lanka.
March 1999 – H.E.Mr.Lakshman Kiriella, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka visited Ukraine.
August 1999 – The Lankan Delegation headed by the H.E.Mr.N.Sikkander, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Ukraine (with residence in Moscow) visited Kyiv. It included members of diplomatic staff of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in the Russian Federation and some representatives of the Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka.
January 2003 – H.E.Dr.Oleh E. Semenets, Ambassador of Ukraine to the Republic of India has visited Sri Lanka to present the Letters of Credence to H.E.Mrs.Chandrika Kumaratunga, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
September 2003 – H.E.Mr.Lakshman Kiriella, Minister of Plantation Industries of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka visited Ukraine.
November 2004 – Mr.M.Pyatnitskiy, Deputy Minister of Economy and for European Integration visited Sri Lanka and signed Bilateral Protocol on Market Access of Goods and Services between Ukraine and Sri Lanka.
November 2006 – New Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Ukraine H.E.Mr.Udayanga Weeratunga met with Mr.Yuriy Kostenko, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, for handing copies of credential letters.
September 2007 – H.E.Dr.Gamini Lakshman Peiris, Minister of Export Development and International Trade of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, visited Ukraine and met with H.E. Mr.Arseniy Yatsenuk, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, and Mr.Serhii Chelnokov, Deputy Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
March 2008 – H.E.Dr.Igor Z.Polikha, Ambassador of Ukraine in the Republic of India, visited Sri Lanka to present the Letters of Credence to H.E. Mr.Mahinda Rajapaksa, President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka.
June 2008 – H.E.Dr.Palitha Kohona, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka visited Ukraine and met with Mr.Oleksandr Gorin, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, for holding the First Ukrainian –Lankan Political Consultations.
