University of Peradeniya

The University of Peradeniya is located on a site of great natural beauty, Central Province of Sri Lanka, in Peradeniya, about 6 km from the historic capital of last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka, Kandy and in close proximity of the Botanical Garden of Peradeniya. It is the largest university in the island in terms of area, the premises covering about 7 square kilometers. It is known for its natural beauty and romantic landscape. The Mahaweli River flows across the campus in a northerly direction. The site also touches the lower slopes of the Hantana range which results in a mild climate, with the temperature usually fluctuating between 18 and 30 degrees Celsius. It is the country’s only residential university and offers a wide variety of facilities and resources. The university consists of eight academic faculties. More than 1800 undergraduates enter the university annually, to make up an undergraduate student population of 6600, and the total number of postgraduate students registered is over 1200. Out of the total undergraduate student population, about 5100 are provided accommodation on and around campus. The University celebrated its Golden Jubilee in 1992.
The university currently comprises seven academic faculties, serving approximately 6,600 undergraduate and 1,200 post-graduate students, mostly from Sri Lanka. About 5,100 of the total student population and staff are provided with accommodation on and around campus. The faculties and affiliated centers are as follows:

  • Faculty of Agriculture

The University of Ceylon was established in 1942 to train young persons in different academic fields which was needed for the development of country. However, the agriculture degree program was launched only 5 years after establishing the University. Initially the Faculty was started in a single building within the University with only four academic staff members. The faculty now harnesses more than hundred well qualified staff members having PhD’s from prestigious institutes all over the world covering all the aspects of Agriculture and related fields. However, this is by far the best agriculture faculty in the island at present celebrating its 60th glorious birthday in year 2008.
Until year 2006, the Faculty offered the 4 year degree program of Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Technology and Management. After careful assessment of the content of the degree program, Faculty now offers two 4 year degree programs. Those are Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Technology and Management and Bachelor of Science in Food Science and Technology. Under these programs, students have the freedom to specialize in a subject area that they prefer offered by the 8 Departments. In very near future the faculty will offer another unique degree program on Animal Science considering the future requirement of highly skilled work force in the animal husbandry sector in Sri Lanka.

University of Kelaniya

The University of Kelaniya is one of the main State Universities of Sri Lanka. Situated just outside the municipal limits of Colombo, in the ancient and historic city of Kelaniya, the University boasts two major campuses, seven locations, six faculties and four institutions.
History
The University of Kelaniya has its origin in the historic Vidyalankara Pirivena, founded in 1875 as a centre of learning for Buddhist monks. It was one of the two great national centers of traditional higher learning, heralding the first phase of the national movement and national resurgence.
With the establishment of modern Universities in Sri Lanka in the 1940s and 1950s, the Vidyalankara Pirivena became the Vidyalankara University in 1959, later the Vidyalankara Campus of the University of Ceylon in 1972 and, transforming as the University of Kelaniya in 1978.

Faculty of Science
The Faculty of Science started functioning in October 1967 with Prof. Charles Dahanayake as the Dean of Science. The intake of the first batch of students was 57. Formal approval for the Faculty was given by the Minister of Education in 1968.
The Faculty was housed in the main building known as the “Science Block”. Due to the continued increase in the student intake from year to year, a new Lecture Theatre Complex and an Auditorium were constructed in 1992, which enabled the intake of students to be increased to 450 in 2003. A new laboratory complex for the Chemistry Department and three buildings for the Departments for Industrial Management, Microbiology and Zoology have now being completed; once they become operational; the annual admissions can be increased further.
The Faculty of Science of the University of Kelaniya was the first among the Sri Lankan Universities to initiate the change over from the traditional three subject (General) degree with end of year examinations to a more flexible Course Unit System, i.e. a modularized credit based system within a two-semester academic year with the end of semester examinations. It offers a variety of course pathways designed to provide maximum possible flexibility in the choice of subjects. Under this system students have the option of reading for a traditional three subject degree or for a degree consisting of two principal subjects and a selection of course units drawn from other subject areas. The B.Sc. (Special) degree courses, begun in1974, have also adopted the course unit system since as of 1986. The course unit system produces graduates who can fit into a wide variety of jobs, as they are equipped with pragmatic skills in addition to academic knowledge.
Presently, the Faculty of Science consists of eight Departments as follows:

  • Department of Botany
  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Industrial management
  • Department of Mathematics
  • Department of Microbiology
  • Department of Physics,

History
The idea of having a Tamil University on the lines of Hebrew University of Israel in the Eastern Province was mooted in 1960 by a group of professors who were teaching at the University of Ceylon. The project was started by purchasing land near Nilaveli, Trincomalee and was abandoned later due to lack of funds. The present project was started by K.W. Devanayakam, the Home Minister of the UNP government with the collaboration of Prof FRSCP Kalpage, Minister of Higher Education during 1981. This university is located in a sandy area and it is not very fertile like the non-classic brown soils found elsewhere in Batticaloa.
The Eastern University is situated in an area where relative peace is maintained by the warring parties in the Sri Lankan conflict. The UNP government turned the Vantharumoolai High School into a regional university with a view to make it cater to the needs of the local students. The primary instruction was in Tamil and English.
It has a very highly qualified teaching staff, trained abroad in several western countries. It catered for the farming population of the Eastern Province. Eastern Province is the breadbasket of Sri Lanka, producing a record rice production in the Ampara district and is a model for the rest of Sri Lanka and Asia.
The Eastern University has three faculties, namely the Arts Faculty, the Science Faculty, and the Agriculture Faculty. The main campus is situated in Vantharumoolai, near the town of Chenkalady. The campus has another premises in Trincomalee known as “Trincomalee premises of EUSL”.
The present civil war in Sri Lanka has affected the growth and development of the university and the funds from the Central Government is very limited and meager in comparison with other similar universities.
Faculty of Agriculture
This was one of the first units which started functioning with the inception of the university.
Due to the highly developed Karadiyan Aaru Agricultural Unit there was an abundant supply of qualified professionals in the field of agriculture. Most of them were trained in USA and UK. They were able to run the faculty without any hiccups. As such a high quality staff came to work in the faculty and as administrators of the university.
