Ministry of Defence

The Ministry of Defense is the policy level organ in the Sri Lankan defense establishment. The stated mission of the ministry is ‘formulation and execution of strategies with regard to defense and safeguarding the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sri Lanka.’

To execute this mission the Ministry has at its disposal implementative institutes in the form of; the departments of the Army, Navy, Air Force and Police, the department of Immigration and Emigration, Department of Registration of Persons, the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board, the General Sir John Kothalawala Defense University, the National cadet Corps and the Home Guard Service.

The ministry comes under the Secretary of Defense who is directly responsible to the Commander in Chief – the president of Sri Lanka and it is organized in to 10 different divisions ranging from the administrative division tasked with the internal administration of the different ministry components to divisions tasked with purely military, financial, media, legal functions etc.
